Rochdale drew 3-3 with Liverpool Under-21s in a chaotic EFL Trophy group match on Tuesday night. The game required a penalty shootout that stretched to the 100th minute to decide the bonus point.
Ian Henderson was the hero for the Dale, scoring twice in three minutes to turn the game around late on. Devante Rodney had opened the scoring for Rochdale in the 37th minute, finishing a move created by Zain Silcott-Duberry. Liverpool U21's Will Wright equalised just before half-time.
The visitors played most of the match with ten men after Mor Talla Ndiaye was sent off in the 21st minute. Despite that disadvantage and Rochdale's 66 percent possession, Liverpool staged a stunning comeback in stoppage time. Goals from B. Trueman and Joshua Sonni-Lambie in the 94th and 96th minutes appeared to have won it, before Will Wright converted a penalty in the 91st minute to make it 3-3.
That triggered an immediate shootout to decide the group's bonus point. The shootout finally ended in the 101st minute when Rochdale goalkeeper Sam Waller saw his effort saved.
The result leaves Rochdale 17th in the League Two table with seven points from seven games. Their recent form shows two wins, two draws and one loss from their last five outings across all competitions.
Attention now turns to a League Two trip to face Fleetwood Town on Saturday.
