Rochdale AFC, newly promoted to League Two, is set to relocate its training base to a 10.7-hectare site on Heywood Old Road, near Bury. The development includes a pavilion, sports pitches, a 50-space car park, and a clubhouse for the club opposite the facility. The plan, proposed by Rochdale Borough Council and the club, aims to replace the existing Bowlee Community Hub with a modern complex offering community rooms, fitness suites, and updated changing facilities. The project also seeks to inspire local youth by placing professional training sessions adjacent to residential areas.
The site, adjacent to the Simister Bowlee housing scheme, will connect to Bowlee Community Park via footpaths and cycle routes. The housing plan includes 1,550 homes split into three phases, with 800 in the southern parcel and 550 in the northern section. The development is part of the Northern Gateway initiative, targeting 7,000 homes, 20,000 jobs, and improved transport infrastructure. Rochdale AFC’s collaboration with local authorities and organizations like the Football Foundation underscores the project’s community focus, aiming to enhance sports facilities and youth engagement.
