Rochdale have confirmed the signing of experienced defender Aden Flint on a short-term contract until January. The centre-back arrives with over 500 senior appearances to his name and will wear the number 44 shirt at the Crown Oil Arena.
Flint joins after a summer of waiting for the right move. "I’m happy to get it done," he said. "It’s been a frustrating summer waiting for the right opportunity and I’m grateful to come and play here."
A long career
Flint's career started in non-league football, featuring for Pinxton, Alfreton Town and Matlock Town. His performances for Alfreton led to an England C call-up. He first played in the EFL for Swindon Town, debuting in a match against Rochdale. A transfer to Bristol City came later, where he spent the most significant portion of his career and once led Championship defenders in scoring during a season.
More recently, Flint was a key part of Mansfield Town’s successful push for promotion, being named to the PFA Team of the Year. He featured for Walsall before becoming a free agent this summer. His signing strengthens a Rochdale defence that has let in 10 goals in its first five League Two matches, placing the team 22nd in the standings.
Squad context
The club's official EFL squad list now includes 20 players, with Flint registered among them. A decision on the registration of young midfielder Will Jenkins will be made in the coming months. Flint’s experience is viewed as crucial for a side whose recent record shows one win, one draw and three defeats from its last five games, which included a goalless draw at his former club Walsall.
Rochdale’s next match is a home game against Oldham. Manager James Caldwell will hope Flint’s organisational abilities can help solidify the defence and offer a basis for better results, beginning with that local derby at the Crown Oil Arena.
